Shredded Paper and Woodchip: How much should I Add?

Shredded Paper and Woodchip: How much should I Add?

Not sure how much shredded paper or bulking agent to add to your HOTBIN? Follow this simple caddy-based method to achieve the perfect balance of food waste, carbon, and airflow. These easy ratios help maintain the ideal moisture level and keep your HOTBIN composting quickly, efficiently, and odor-free.

Unsure about how much woodchip and shredded paper to add?

Whatever sized container you are using to collect your waste, here is an easy way to understand the ratios and required measurements of bulking agent and shredded paper to add in addition your waste.

What to Add?

  1. Empty your full kitchen caddy or waste container into the HOTBIN.
  2. Refill the same caddy halfway with dry shredded paper and/or cardboard, then add it to the HOTBIN.
  3. Fill the caddy about one-fifth full with bulking agent and add it to the HOTBIN.
  4. Using the HOTBIN rake (or a similar garden tool), give the top layer a quick stir, then close the lid. That's it—you're done!

A Few Notes
The wetter the waste you add into the HOTBIN the more shredded card or paper will need to be added.

Grass is very wet, it gives a great heat boost to the HOTBIN as it's very quick and easy to digest waste for bacteria. However if additional moisture absorbing materials are not added it can quickly turn into a wet sludge - here is how to avoid that.

Remember to keep an eye on your HOTBIN and if in doubt add a bit more shredded paper and bulking agent to ensure good moisture control and airflow. It is much easier to fix a dry bin, than a wet one!
