Backed by Engineering Expertise
HOTBIN Composting USA is part of Engineered Foam Products LLC, a subsidiary of Engineered Foam Products Ltd. (EFP), the original manufacturer and owner of the HOTBIN® brand.
For decades, EFP has specialised in the design and manufacture of advanced expanded polypropylene (EPP) and expanded polystyrene (EPS) products used across automotive, packaging, industrial and consumer markets.
This engineering expertise is at the heart of HOTBIN. The same knowledge used to create high-performance insulated products has been applied to develop a durable, thermally efficient composting system designed to last for years.
Designed to Reduce Waste, Built to Last
Every HOTBIN helps divert organic waste away from landfill and transform it into valuable compost that can be returned to the soil.
Built from durable EPP material, HOTBIN is designed for long-term use and year-round performance. By combining efficient composting with a long product lifespan, HOTBIN offers a practical and sustainable solution for reducing household waste while improving garden health.
The Story Behind HOTBIN
HOTBIN was invented by composting enthusiast Tony Callaghan in collaboration with Engineered Foam Products (EFP) in 2010.
Tony's interest in composting began as a teenager when he worked on an allotment alongside an experienced gardener who introduced him to the principles of successful composting. The lessons stayed with him for decades.
Years later, when composting at home, Tony became increasingly frustrated by traditional compost bins. While they accepted plenty of waste, they often took more than a year to produce usable compost and could be messy, unreliable and difficult to manage.
The defining moment came after a particularly unwelcome encounter with a rat in the compost bin, prompting his wife Elaine to issue a challenge:
"You have two choices, either sort it out or STOP composting."
Rather than give up, Tony immersed himself in composting research and experimentation. His goal was clear: create a composting system that could handle more waste types, work faster, avoid pests and odours, and be practical for everyday households.
The result was the first HOTBIN prototype.
Following successful trials, Tony partnered with Engineered Foam Products to manufacture the product commercially. HOTBIN officially launched in 2011 and was acquired by EFP in 2013, helping bring fast, practical hot composting to gardeners across the UK and beyond.
