International Compost Awareness Week (ICAW) is the largest education initiative in the world dedicated to promoting the benefits of composting. Held each year during the first full week of May, ICAW brings together individuals, communities, businesses, schools, and organizations across the globe to raise awareness about how composting makes a difference — not just in our backyards, but for the planet.
By turning food scraps and garden waste into nutrient-rich compost, we can:
- Reduce food waste and keep valuable organic materials out of landfills
- Build healthier soils that retain moisture, support plant growth, and reduce the need for chemical fertilizers
- Fight climate change by lowering methane emissions from landfills and capturing carbon in soils
At HOTBIN, we’re proud to support ICAW and help more people discover how easy it is to compost all year round — whether you’re composting in New Hampshire, Florida, or anywhere in between. Throughout the week (May 5–9), we’ll be sharing daily composting tips, insights, and success stories to celebrate how small actions, like composting a single banana peel, can have a big environmental impact.
Stay tuned and join us in celebrating the power of composting!
Why It Matters
- 30–40% of food goes to waste
- Composting keeps it out of landfill and turns it into something valuable (fertilized soil)
